PGA Tour: Huge changes to 2024 format & events
The PGA Tour has announced that many of its events will reportedly see radical changes in 2024.
The key take-aways have been; smaller fields of between 70 and 80 players, as well as the removal of the 36-hole cut. There will be some events that are staying the same however - these are all four Majors, The Players Championship and the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
This move has been compared to rival the LIV Golf League which also has no cuts, and limited fields. This only intensifies the bitter rivalry between the PGA Tour and the Saudi- funded LIV Golf League.
Who will qualify for these events has been the biggest question. PGA Tour’s commissioner, Jay Monahan announced that fields for the eight other designated events (not the ones stated above) will include: the top 50 players from the previous year's FedEx Cup points list through the playoffs; the top 10 players from the current year's points list who aren't otherwise eligible; the top five players who aren't otherwise eligible who earn the most points in tournaments between designated events; winners of current-year, full-point events; PGA Tour members in the top 30 of the Official World Golf Ranking; and four sponsor exemptions, which will be restricted to PGA Tour members.
All slightly confusing isn’t it… we agree.
Max Homa & Rory McIlroy have said they both like the changes with Rory saying “I want to give everyone a fair shake at this, which I think this structure has done…There's ways to play into it. It's trying to get the top guys versus the hot guys, right? I think that creates a really compelling product.”
More players will be voicing their opinions over the next coming days/weeks. LIV has already responded with a tweet saying “Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Congratulations PGA Tour. Welcome to the future.”
