PGA TOUR: Fitzpatrick wins RBC Heritage

The reigning U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick defeats defending champion Jordan Spieth in a playoff to win the RBC Heritage, earning his second career PGA TOUR title.

Fitzpatrick defeats Spieth with a birdie-3 on the third playoff hole (No. 18) after matching pars on the first (No. 18) and second (par-3 17th) extra holes.

He is the third player from England to win on TOUR this season, tying the most in a single season on record (1983-present). 2022-23 - Justin Rose, Matt Wallace, Matt Fitzpatrick. 2017-18 - Justin Rose, Paul Casey, Ian Poulter. 2010 - Ian Poulter, Justin Rose, Lee Westwood.

Fitzpatrick is the second player from England to win the RBC Heritage and first since Nick Faldo in 1984 and he moves from No. 81 to No. 22 in the FedExCup standings, as well as, from No. 16 to No. 8 in the Official World Golf Ranking, the highest position of his career.

The playoff between Fitzpatrick and Spieth was the first on TOUR featuring multiple players that had previously won a major championship since the 2020 Sentry Tournament of Champions between Justin Thomas, Patrick Reed and Xander Schauffele. Spieth becomes the first defending champion to lose in a playoff since Schauffele at the previously mentioned tournament.

Jordan Spieth now has 18 runner-up finishes on TOUR since the start of the 2013 season, four more than any other player in that span. But, it’s his best result in 12 career title defenses on TOUR.

The World No. 2 Scottie Scheffler finishes T11, his 11th consecutive finish of T12 or better. Whilst world No. 1 and FedExCup leader Jon Rahm finishes T15 - he was also the first player since Spieth in 2015 to play on TOUR the week after winning the Masters Tournament.
